Phytoestrogens: Plant Compounds for Hormone Balance
Ever noticed how your grandmother's generation, raised on tofu, soy milk and tempeh, seemed to talk less about hot flushes than younger women do today? Part of the explanation may lie in a group of plant compounds called phytoestrogens.
What Is Phytoestrogens?
Phytoestrogens are natural compounds found in plants that happen to share a similar shape to the hormone estrogen, which is why they can loosely "fit" into the same receptors estrogen uses in the body. Phytoestrogens are compounds found in plants that, due to their molecular structure and size, resemble estrogens, in particular to estradiol, and that exert estrogenic and/or antiestrogenic effects. They are not hormones themselves, and their effect is much gentler than the estrogen your body produces.
There are two main families you'll come across. The isoflavones, found at high levels in soya products, and the lignans, found in wholegrain cereals, fruits and vegetables, and flaxseed. Isoflavones are the type most studied in Asian diets, since soybeans are their richest natural source, while lignans quietly show up in the wholegrain rice, oats and vegetables many of us already eat.
Interestingly, what your gut bacteria do with these compounds matters almost as much as how much you eat. Some health effects of soy may be dependent on one's capacity to convert the isoflavone daidzein to equol during digestion. Not everyone's gut microbiome makes this conversion equally well, which is one reason two people eating the same bowl of tofu can experience different effects.
Why Do People Take It?
Easing menopause hot flushes and night sweats
This is the most talked-about reason women turn to soy-rich foods or isoflavone supplements. Research suggests the effect is real but modest — a 2016 systematic review and meta-analysis of 62 studies involving 6,653 women found that specific phytoestrogen supplementations, such as soy isoflavones, were associated with modest reductions in the frequency of hot flashes and vaginal dryness but no significant reduction in night sweats. For Singaporean and Malaysian women, who often 'tahan' (endure) these symptoms quietly rather than seek help early, knowing that everyday soy foods may offer gentle relief can be reassuring, even if it's not a dramatic fix.
Supporting heart health
Soy isoflavones have a longer track record here than almost any other benefit. Isoflavone supplements also consistently alleviate menopausal hot flashes provided they contain sufficient amounts of the predominant soybean isoflavone genistein, while the evidence that isoflavones reduce bone loss in postmenopausal women is unimpressive. Beyond isoflavones specifically, there's evidence that some supplements, such as garlic and soy, can lower cholesterol, their effects are small compared to those of cholesterol-lowering medicines. Think of it as one small, helpful piece of a bigger heart-healthy diet, not a replacement for it.
A possible role in cancer risk patterns
This is a nuanced area, and worth explaining carefully. The evidence to date suggests that soy food intake in the amount consumed in Asian populations may have protective effects against breast cancer, and interestingly, a reduced risk of breast cancer was first reported in premenopausal Singapore Chinese women who were high consumers of soy. Mayo Clinic is careful to note the bigger picture: eating soybeans or food that contains soy will not raise a person's risk of breast cancer, and looking across populations, research finds that eating foods with soy may lower the risk of breast cancer.
Bone and blood sugar support
Isoflavones are also being studied for their antioxidant activity in cells lining blood vessels and elsewhere in the body. In test tube and animal work, they've been shown to boost the body's own antioxidant defences, which researchers think may help protect tissues from everyday oxidative wear and tear. Human studies on bone density specifically remain mixed, so this benefit is best seen as promising rather than proven.
Bioavailability & Absorption
How well your body actually uses phytoestrogens depends heavily on food form and your gut microbiome. In whole soybeans, isoflavones are bound to sugar molecules; digestion or fermentation (as in tempeh or miso) frees them into a form your body absorbs more easily. This is one reason fermented soy foods common in Peranakan and Southeast Asian kitchens may behave slightly differently in the body than unfermented soy milk or edamame.
Individual gut bacteria composition explains a lot of the person-to-person variation researchers see in studies — some people convert daidzein into the more active compound equol efficiently, others barely at all, and this genetic-and-microbiome lottery may partly explain why phytoestrogens seem to help some people's symptoms more than others.
Safety Basics
For most people eating normal amounts of soy foods as part of meals, phytoestrogens are considered safe. Except for people with soy allergies, soy is considered to be a safe food, and in research studies, soy protein supplements and soy extracts rich in isoflavones have been used safely on a short-term basis; the safety of long-term use is uncertain.
A few groups should be more careful. The most common side effects of soy are digestive upsets, such as constipation and diarrhea, and soy may alter thyroid function in people who are deficient in iodine. There's also a specific caution for higher-dose supplement use: long-term use of soy extracts, which contain phytoestrogens, has been associated with thickening of the lining of the uterus. Anyone with a personal or family history of hormone-sensitive cancers, or currently on hormone-related medication, should speak with their doctor before adding concentrated isoflavone supplements, as opposed to everyday food sources, to their routine.
Natural Food Sources
- Tofu, taupok and soft beancurd (tau huay) — everyday staples across Chinese, Peranakan and vegetarian cooking in Singapore and Malaysia
- Soy milk and soy-based drinks, often enjoyed alongside kopitiam breakfasts
- Tempeh, a fermented soy food especially common in Malaysian and Indonesian-influenced kitchens
- Edamame and whole soybeans
- Miso and soy sauce (in much smaller isoflavone amounts than whole soy)
- Flaxseed and sesame seeds, rich in lignans
- Chickpeas, lentils and other legumes
- Whole grains such as brown rice and oats

Phytoestrogens aren't a miracle fix, and they're certainly not a substitute for medical care if menopause symptoms are seriously affecting your quality of life. But as a naturally occurring part of everyday soy, legumes and whole grains already common across Singaporean and Malaysian kitchens, they're a low-risk, food-first way to potentially support hormone balance, heart health and healthy aging. Given our multiracial food culture already features tofu, tempeh and legumes in Chinese, Malay and Indian cooking traditions, most of us don't need a supplement aisle to get more phytoestrogens — just a slightly more intentional plate.
